weekly submission

so every week i'm going to share something from my wish list, so i can be searching for more cool moderately priced things, and so i can shop online. the problem is that everything i'm going to list is something i really like, so it will be hard not to buy everything.

i heart coasters

One thing that I’ve been crazy about lately is letterpressed coasters. This is something I have wanted to try in my own letterpressing, but haven’t got to yet. Check out these darling coasters from papered together on etsy. I love them!

my etsy shop

My etsy shop is having a couple glitches, and I just wanted to let you guys know that I haven’t forgotten about it. I promise it will be this week.

mexico and modern printmaking

Okay, so I know this is technically cheating, but it was too hard to pass up. Since I was a printmaking major in college, and I love woodcuts and linocuts especially, I had to show this image. Cake + pie has a great blog and she is a huge inspiration, and she featured some images of the exhibit Mexico and modern printmaking and this was my favorite piece.

a side note

although I want to stick to featuring northwest artists, mostly because it’s a area that I want to be known in, I will not turn down the opportunity to talk about international and/or non-northwest artists when I think that they are important. This ‘disclaimer’ is mostly for the above post. I think that everyone should have an opportunity to be an influence.

little yolo

i couldn't resist this. yolo colorhouse has started a new line called little yolo. the line on the picture says it all. i love this. i love kids, and how much fun they have, and i especially like the idea of surrounding them with an inspiring (not to mention non-toxic) environment. check out the colors of their first line, all named 'sprout'. these colors probably have some emotional effect on kids, and will inspire them to create great things. personally, i would paint a wainscotting of blackboard paint on the bottom half of the wall, and then a little yolo paint on the rest of the wall. that my friends would be so awesome for little ones. or i may just do it in my own house.

yolo colorhouse

one thing i love about the northwest is that color from nature is one of the biggest inspirations. personally, i love the textures as much as the colors. so Virginia Young and Janie Lowe are a big inspiration to me, with their brand yolo colorhouse, located in portland, oregon. they started yolo colorhouse in 1996, and have grown to be one of the most well known eco-paint creators in the northwest (if not larger area). i remember this beautiful spread in sunset magazine of their studio, and how they roller the big samples of paint... also what i love about these women is that they went to college in art, and one of them is an illustrator. i love that they found a niche and are working with something so basic (colored paint) but have made a huge impact. they make low voc paint, along with lower impact on health and environment. check them out here.

in the midst of life

once i feel that i get going in my creative arenas, then other things change. i am looking for a new job and that is taking up alot of my free time right now. i apologize, because i really want to be dedicated to this. i want to get a part time job, and do my printing and inspiration-finding on the side, but we will see. so i am sorry if the next couple weeks are slow going.

the most frustrating thing is that i am just getting going in ideas, venues, networking, etc. and then money has to rear it's head, blah blah. anyways, just when it's going good in my creative life, then mundane life takes priority. i can't wait until it switches back. boy do i miss it already.

last night's show

the fashion show was a success! it sold out and sadly they had to turn more than a hundred people away. the promise for next time is for a larger venue! i sold a couple items, met up with some new and old friends, and saw some great local fashion. thanks to all of you who volunteered and showed up! i am excited for the next one already.

on my wish list

this bag by Puckish is definately on my wish list. it is smart, functional and intelligent. three things i value. you can buy their other printed bags and shirts here.

coming up...

hey friends. so, for me this blog is not just a place to show cool design, but it is a part of my goals as an artist/ design person. it's a goal because it keeps me thinking about my influences and my work, and also because it keeps me searching for new stuff.
so, after that "focus statement"-esque paragraph, here are some things you should be watching for in the near future:
a. local shop features, including photos, interviews and product samples,
b. small places making big differences,
c. profiles of some really neat people who make really neat stuff,
d. and more to come...

stewart + brown loves me!

okay, so actually they sent me an email that said they did, when it was actually a sale email. but in all actuality, i love them. they have the greatest style, and they approach it with a lifestyle and a great design ethic that i think makes them one of the top (and makes me wish i was living it too). it's a husband and wife team (which i always admire.), she being the trained painter, and he the trained graphic designer, they came up with the most thought out brand to be. i had first read about them in outside magazine a couple years ago, and i instantly loved them. snip-its of karen's journals are available for browsing on their site, along with some great photo shoots of their wonderfully calm clothes. i want a whole closet full of their clothes so bad! this is my favorite right now. who am i kidding? give me one of each!

getting inky

since my pilot press isn't going quite yet, i have resorted to working on textile printing and sewing. lotta jansdotter has been a great inspiration, and i have branched out into housewares as she does. i am selling some of my printed napkins and coasters at the fashion show this saturday, in the product fair. i am fairly excited, since this is the first event which i have tried to sell anything in a while. although i am a little nervous about this being such a public event. i am putting out an email and mailing list for all interested, so hopefully that will spark some interest. enjoy.
(above: left is printed pods on an aa bag, right is printed pods on hand sewn linen napkins.)

fashion show in six days!

i am reminding everyone that there is a fashion show this saturday here in eugene, featuring many of the cool and creative local designers. i got involved in this event from the wonderful dagua at ladydove and mitra from deluxe. look for future interview features with both of them. as for me, i will be debuting some of my newest projects: screenprinted linen napkins, printed cork coasters, and possibly some hats (emphasis on possibly). come check everyone out and dress glamourous because there will be a fashion photographer on duty, along with models strutting the runway, a silent auction, and a bar of course. only $6 at the door, and it is something you will not want to miss!

paper cloud

This is a husband-wife combo out of the Midwest, and strangely enough, there is quite a bit of great design that comes out of the Midwest. I love their use of simple line and complementary colors. This one is called ‘onionpod art’.
Anyone who says this wins me over: “We love the process of making things, getting our hands covered in paint and ink…For us, the real joy comes in thinking of a design and being able to run downstairs and print it immediately. No factories or supply chains, just lots of creativity, fun, and love.”
Check out their website.

adding to my design library

I am so exicited! I ordered lotta jansdotter’s new book that is coming out in april of 2007. (it’s available on amazon for pre-order. I have a feeling it may sell out) it is a sewing how-to for simple projects. She is easily my favorite textile and surface designer. Check out her blog for updates.

a part of our house

so here is a part of our house, and it is a small collection of some favorite things. in the closeup: plant from our friends the staves, bamboo vase and cool spring thing from Oregon Art Supply, egg press label card, studio olivine notepad, metal type from my collection, swirl bowl from down to earth, earrings from deluxe (that remind me of this), a medium format roll of film to be developed, and a card that says, ‘the last type Lewis Osborne printed with’ that came with my printing press.just thought I would share with you.

a year and a half later...

So I know it is about a year and a half ago, but I wanted to show how cool our wedding invitations were (thanks to Daniel for ‘pleased as punch’ making it onto an invitation) I designed them and then some friends at egg press printed them for me. They got the colors spot on. My plan is to get some samples of invitations out at ladydove for the upcoming wedding season, and the long term goal is to be at the wedding show at the fairgrounds in January of 2008.
